The End of the Line Is Where Automation Pays First: Palletizing’s AI Moment

While the robotics press chases humanoids and foundation models, the most consequential automation story of the past month has been unfolding at the least glamorous station in the plant: the end of the line. In the space of a few weeks, Doosan Robotics launched an AI-driven palletizing package, igus introduced a new palletizing cobot platform alongside its machine-planning tool, and Universal Robots, Robotiq and Siemens pushed a jointly engineered palletizing cell from demo to production-ready. Palletizing has quietly become the application where AI in manufacturing stops being a slide and starts being a purchase order.

Why the End of the Line Became the Proving Ground

There is a reason vendors converge here. Palletizing is the job that is hardest to staff, hardest to keep staffed, and most expensive to get wrong. It is repetitive, it is heavy, it runs at the exact moment when a stoppage backs up every upstream process, and it carries a measurable injury profile. It is also structurally simple enough that AI can add real value without turning into a research project — pattern generation, payload and stability reasoning, and adaptation to changing case dimensions.

That combination is why palletizing consistently posts the shortest payback of any robotic application. The IFR’s World Robotics data puts the global market value of industrial robot installations at an all-time high of US$16.7 billion, and end-of-line handling is a disproportionate share of that growth — not because it is fashionable, but because the business case closes without argument.

What Actually Changed Technically

Three things, all of them practical:

  • Pattern generation moved to the floor. FANUC’s PalletTool lets an operator enter product dimensions on a tablet teach pendant and receive candidate pallet patterns with space-efficiency figures for each — no engineer, no offline session.
  • Simulation now precedes steel. PalletPRO builds, debugs and validates a full palletizing application offline, then downloads the tested program straight to the robot controller.
  • The payload gap closed. FANUC’s CRX collaborative range now reaches 30 kg with drag-and-drop programming and hand guiding, while the M-410 parallel-link series covers payloads to 800 kg and 3.1 m of reach. The awkward middle — too heavy for a cobot, too light to justify a caged cell — has largely disappeared.

What This Means for Israeli Manufacturers

Israeli food, beverage, plastics, pharma and logistics operations are carrying the sharpest version of this problem. Labour costs continued climbing through 2026 and the skilled-workforce shortage deepened, while national labour productivity growth has trailed Western peers by a wide margin. End-of-line stations are where that gap is most visible — and most fixable.

The practical advice is unromantic: do not start your automation programme with the most technically interesting cell in the plant. Start with the pallet. It is the fastest route to a working robot, a trained team, and an internal reference that makes the next three projects far easier to approve.
